Celebrating Good Friday And Easter In Canada

With Good Friday, Easter and Easter Monday around the corner, it’s a good time to examine the origins of these special days on the annual calendar.

For those who follow Christianity as a religion, Easter marks the death and resurrection of Christ. Ever since those first couple of days following the life and death on the cross of Jesus, the Christian church have been attached to Good Friday and Easter because of the importance of these days within the context of Christianity.

This might lead one to ask why the dates for Good Friday and Easter keep on moving. The main reason for this is to be found in a ruling made by the first official church council, namely the Council of Nicaea, in 325 AD. According to this ruling, Easter itself should annually fall on the Sunday directly after the first full moon following the spring equinox.

Still, according to the ruling as well as tradition, Easter Sunday must each year fall between March 25 and April 25.

How Canadians Celebrate Easter

For Canadians, Good Friday, Easter and Easter Monday mark a special and celebratory time on the annual calendar.

Most Canadians celebrate much in the same way as many other countries in the western world. This means attending religious services on both Good Friday as well as Easter Sunday. The holiday is furthermore marked with the gatherings of family, Easter egg hunts, the enjoyment of hot cross buns, and general get-togethers.

Easter egg hunts in particular are performed with enormous joy and glee in Canada. Eggs are considered a symbol of new life, and as such, the egg became a symbol of deep meaning within the context of Christ’s resurrection.

Decorating eggs around Easter has its roots in the Middle Ages. This was when people began decorating eggs in a colourful and vibrant manner, and when they began enjoying eggs as a treat following the attendance of Mass on Easter Sunday following the fast of Lent.
