Many people like to have a drink when they play casino games, be they online casino games, or at a land based casino. A great number of players tend to gravitate towards a Martini, which more than likely has a lot to do with a certain suave spy and his personal drink choices. Others like a good spirit on the rocks, while others still are perfectly happy with something non-alcoholic. Either way, having a drink while playing casino games is a very common practice.

But, there is a certain drink that has been given the very prominent name of the Casino Cocktail. At first, you may think it is just a fairly simple drink with an interesting name, perhaps being specifically marketed at casino patrons. But it turns out that there is an interesting story behind the Casino Cocktail. The drink may not be as popular as it once was, back when it first appeared in a recipe book, but it still holds a special place in many people’s hearts.

Here is a closer look at the Casino Cocktail.

What Goes Into A Casino Cocktail

The Casino Cocktail is not what one would call a particularly complicated drink. As far as drinks go, it could even be referred to as a straightforward.  It’s made up of the following ingredients:

It’s heavy on the gin, so a wise person wouldn’t want to have too many of these over the course of an evening, especially not when engaging in a casino game like Blackjack that requires major focus. In fact, a player might want to stick to just one or two, if they’re intending on playing their best.

But how did this relatively simple drink get given the name of the Casino Cocktail? And, more to the point, why is it not still being served in casinos around the world?

The Casino Cocktail Origin

The Casino Cocktail first appeared in a recipe book back in 1930. Along with 750 other cocktail recipes, the book in question was The Savoy Cocktail Book. The Savoy Hotel, for those unaware, was the first luxury hotel in London. First opening it’s doors in 1889; guests were blown away by incredible innovations like electric lights, electric elevators, and hot running water. Seen as outrageously impressive innovations at the time, The Savoy Hotel drew the most prominent members of society.

But The Savoy Hotel was not just known for its innovations, it was also known for its incredible selection of cocktails. The Savoy Cocktail Book was a collection of these cocktails. The book itself was compiled by a Mister Harry Craddock, who gained a reputation for being the finest bartender at the Savoy. And this was no small amount of praise at the time.

Mister Craddock went on to be a co-founder of the United Kingdom Bartenders guild.

The Savoy Cocktail Book

The Savoy Cocktail book gained enormous popularity over the years, so much so that it has been kept alive ever since it’s original publication. Today many of the finest establishments in the United Kingdom and around the world have a copy of the book close at hand.

Remarkably, all 750 of the original recipes are still present, including the famous Casino Cocktail. Additions have been made, of course, bringing the book up to date, with the most recent additions being made in 2014.

Perhaps when next engaging in a few casino games, a savvy person may order, or make, a nice Casino Cocktail. After all, what could possibly be more fitting?
